The Strategic Situation in Jerusalem Demands a Change of Policy

Udi Dekel in INSS Insight No. 756, writes The Strategic Situation in Jerusalem Demands a Change of Policy

The uniqueness of the current outbreak of violence is that those driving it are the young Palestinians of East Jerusalem, who demonstrate willingness to confront Israeli military and police forces and engage in acts of sacrifice. The events in Jerusalem refute three basic assumptions that thus far have guided the policy of the Israeli government.

The first is that the status quo is sustainable, not only on the Temple Mount, but also in Israel’s greater regional strategic situation, and that any alternative would have more negative implications than those of the current situation.

The second assumption is that Israel can remain isolated from the upheavals in the Arab world, particularly the increased strength of the radicals under the influence of the Islamic State and other Salafi jihadi organizations.

The third assumption is that Jerusalem in its current greater borders is united and will remain so.

I think he is right about questioning the three assumptions but I think he is wrong on what Israel should do about it.

  1. Israel must make the case of her LEGAL OWNERSHIP of the WHOLE of Israel, including, Jerusalem, J & S and the Golan. Many non-Jewish legal experts support this position. Then Israel decides what to do with these “areas”.

  2. Israel is expending various efforts to stabilize and calm the situation, including a wide deployment of police, border patrol, and army units in Jerusalem; observation and physical monitoring of those who seek to exit the Arab neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city; a change in open fire procedures against assailants with knives or stones; and punishments – demolition of terrorists’ homes and confiscation of blue identity cards that grant them freedom of movement. However, these measures have not reduced the prevalent motivation among the youth, …..

I dont see this statement as accurate:
the efforts are foolish as no hostile areas have been cordoned and searched for weapons to confiscate and criminals, terrorists, inciters and anti semites to be place in administrative detention. the whole thing is a show designed to fail waiting for the next attack rather than embarking proactively to attack the anti semites in their homes. So far the measures are ineffective kids stuff that police in any 3rd world nation do better. Beefing up forces is a con game of doing nothing and waiting almost as if one wants the attacks to occur.
as for the other measures they have only been announced with no substantial action taking place as yet. this is BB’s usual MO… to get his constituents to accept his announcements as done deeds and then never actually do the deeds.

There should have already been massive incarcerations and indefinite detentions with deportations and many homes demolished… its all BS.

  3. a. Submission of an Israeli proposal to establish a consulting committee to define and examine the status quo on the Temple Mount, with the participation of Israel, Jordan, the United States, and representatives of the Palestinian population in Jerusalem. It is also possible to invite Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Morocco to be present (not as members) at this committee.

absolutely insane proposal to give israeli soverignty to foreigners thus compounding Dayans original error and making it worse. the prime approach should be to identify paths which reverse dayans error of giving a foreign nation control over any religious building in Israel. No discussion should be held with foreigners, that only repeats the same massive blunder of Dayan.

    b. Economic measures:….. At the same time, it is vital to promote training projects and employment for the young unemployed population in East Jerusalem, and direct educated Arabs to appropriate places of employment.

No, this rewards those who should be punished and deported. A programs which extracts severe punishment for engaging in and inciting any anti semitic activity should be in place.

    c. Inclusion of Israeli Arab leadership in decision making: So far, leaders of the Arab public in Israel have demonstrated responsibility and prevented a more serious conflagration.

NO, the opposite is true, it is revealed that the Israeli arab leadership and possibly the bulk of the collective are a 5th column. NO israeli arab muslims should participate. Only Jews. the problem at the mount is not arab riots which can be dealt with by shooting them. the problem is the continued anti semitism and attacks on jews going back decades. the solutions is zero tolerance for any form of anti semitism in Israel. the muslim anti semites engaging in violent activity should be mandatory immediately deported.

    d. For the longer term – the institutionalization of a separate municipal authority for the Arab neighborhoods and villages of East Jerusalem,

absolutely NOT…. this thinking of pandering to anti semites in Israel led to the current scenario. anti semites should be deported, there should be zero tolerance.

Even if the predictions that the storm will calm down in a short time are correct, and independent of the entire range of Israeli-Palestinian relations, these measures should be advanced in any way possible in order to increase the chances of avoiding the next eruption of violence in the capital and its negative effect on the entire country.

it is such faulty thought which led Israelis to their current position. all will be set right by implementing laws against muslim anti semitism which require the mandatory deporting of any muslim who engages in anti semtic incitement or attacks.

this leftist rubbish has no basis in reality and is merely another failed parroting of anachronistic mantras. the hope for peace and cooperation has never resided in the minds of the arab muslim collective…. it is a Jewish delusion pursued only by jews. after so many decades and chances at the MOunt and at other Jewish sites plus with any so called peace process there is only abject failure that jews should begin to wonder as to their basic premise which is that the Pals want peaceful coexistence with the Jews. Once one accepts that this is a delusional fantasy without a shred of evidence in support, the Jews can shift their focus to concepts untried. the Jews have fulfilled einsteins definition of insanity and now it is time to become sane.

This means throwing out all the nonsensical irrelevant paradigms of the delusional left and beginning with new premises. Israel must have complete sovereignty over all the land it controls and all sub authorities are subject to Israeli rule and law. The abused wakf agreement must end, the status quo of jews being attacked in their homeland must end with zero tolerance for anti semitism and all anti semites must be deported.
