The new fence will run from the border east of Eilat to the Timna airport, and will be built entirely on Israeli land. Flotilla is a bust.
Israel will build a fence along part of the border with Jordan, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, before a meeting with the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
The new fence will span the 30 km of the border with Jordan northeast of Eilat, to the Timna airport, and will be built entirely on Israeli land, thus not harming Jordan or its national interests, Netanyahu explained.
“This is an important part of our national security,” he stated.
The Security Cabinet authorized on Sunday the fence’s construction and funding, he said.
There are currently fences between Israel and Sinai, and in the north, between Israel and Syria.
Netanyahu also praised the IDF and the Navy for perfectly executing their mission to stop the “hypocritical” Gaza flotilla.
“There’s no need for small ships like these to bring supplies, materials or humanitarian aid to Gaza,” the prime minister said, pointing out that Israel allows 800 trucks into Gaza each day.
Since Operation Protective Edge last summer, Israel transferred 1.6 million tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
“To transfer an amount like that, one would need half a million boats like the ones that headed for Gaza,” Netanyahu added. “There’s no need for that. If someone wants to send aid, he can use the land crossings, where we check the materials to prevent weapons from being transferred.”
The prime minister said he was pleased with the relatively low media profile the flotilla had, saying that it shows people understand it is based on lies.
Netanyahu suggested that the activists on the flotilla “go to Syria, where 300,000 people were massacred and banished from their homes. Instead, they chose to sail to the only democracy in the Middle East, in which terrorists shoot at its citizens.”
“That is why the flotilla is infected with hypocrisy,” he explained.
As for Iran, Netanyahu said he is not impressed with the way talks between Teheran and the world powers are progressing.
“The agreement is going from bad to terrible and it is getting worse day by day,” Netanyahu observed.
“Unfortunately, we see Iran’s demands increasing along with more concessions by the powers,” he said. “[The agreement] paves the way for Iran to be a power with a nuclear arsenal.”
According to Netanyahu, within a decade, Iran will have dozens of nuclear bombs, and will be able to develop a smaller amount of weapons before that. This will spark a nuclear arms race in the region.
In addition, he said the agreement will grant Iran hundreds of billions of dollars by removing sanctions, which will then allow Teheran to fund increasing aggression in the Middle East.
“For all these reasons, the agreement is bad,” he stated.
