Why does Israel continue with negotiations

By Ted Belman

PM Netanyahu stressed at the Likud meeting.

1. Knesset and the people will decide on any agreement reached.

2. Israel won’t let Iran have “weapons capability” and UN past resolutions on Iran must be adhered to.

3. Our security needs must be met

4. “[I have] one goal – to ensure that the people of Israel [stay] in its historic homeland. This is what guides me.”

Does he really mean what he said in the latter point? Our “historic homeland” is Judea and Samaria.

5. “We are not ceasing or slowing down efforts to build up our land and to develop it, nor [are we stopping] expansion efforts,”

Both the EU and the US have demanded that Israel not announce more construction when the third batch of murderers are released. Bibi said he will continue construction and expansion. Tough talk but it flies in the face of the curtailed construction that he ordered. We’ll soon know what he will do.

6. Netanyahu: Palestinian Authority, Not Building, Prevents Peace

JPOST reports:

Erekat said the two sides could reach a framework agreement by April 29, the end of the nine-month period, that would “specify the borders, percentage of the [land] swaps, security arrangements, Jerusalem status, refugees” and other core issues.

Erekat told reporters that there will be no Palestinian state without the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, and that Hamas was a legitimate political party like any other, adding that the upcoming elections will be a solution to the ongoing conflict between the two factions.

JPOST reports:

PA President Mahmoud Abbas is in talks with Hamas head Khaled Mashaal and Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to form unity government ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections, reported Palestinian news agency Ma’an Tuesday.

We know Hamas is in trouble now and much of their budget comes from the PA which comes from the EU. Bringing them into the government won’t change much because the negotiating position of the PA comports with the goals of Hamas. i.e. no final settlement and no recognition.

Given the public stance of both sides, you have to wonder why we are waisting time with negotiations.

  1. Political perception internationally and domestically (for center voters) is why Israel is negotiating when good results from the negotiations are impossible. To minimize the damage so called friendly countries could do realistically to a very small country (Israel) via reducing arms sales and in the trade market. It is a balancing act by Bibi. He has a responsibility to the Jewish people.

Do I agree with everything he does no. There needs to be a quieter way to just build or just say this is what we decided to do. The building needs to be were Israel draws a line in the sand with our friendly but very arrogant friends in Washington and Europe.

  2. …. because the West has the means to impose its will on IL. At least so far, and IL does not want to challenge the West!!!!

  3. Maybe the simplest answer is that, once the talks fall apart, which they will, we just start building again (because right now Netanyahu is only saying we can and will build but we really don’t) slowly and assuredly- thus creating facts on the ground- we can’t be worried about who is blamed for the failed talks. If we simultaneously start sabotaging their economy and slowly start offering them financial incentives to leave we can begin to reduce the Arab population between the Jordan and Mediterranean- the ultimate answer to your question. I still believe that “Jordan is Palestine” is the answer but I’m not expertise enough on the subject to know how that could be made to work or what the inner political dynamics in Jordan are that could make it come about- but I’m also not so sure that it’s as far-fetched as a lot of critics think. Anybody have any thoughts along those lines?

“I’m ready to negotiate with the PLO. I believe we should sit with them and tell them, No.” Rabbi Meir Kahane

    Israeli Jews are stupid:
Israel allows a stream of Jew-hatred in all the Palis media
Israel shows herself to be powerless, unable to fight Arab terrorists—though Syria and Egypt crushed them easily through inhumane means.
Egypt, and Lebanon shelled Palis refugee camps; Israel’s reluctance to do likewise provokes her enemies as they expected us to behave like they do.
Every Arab country refuses to assimilate Palis refugees and bans them from many occupations.

Israel’s fixation on peace with the Palis is absurd. The other Arabs don’t care much about the Palis. If Israel signs a peace deal with PA, other Arabs will see the peace as a product of the Palis struggle rather than of Israeli goodwill, and thus an Israeli defeat.

A peace process cannot lead to peace. If history has any lesson for us, it is that peace is only achieved after the unconditional capitulation of one’s enemy.
A peace process is immoral. Palis Arabs don’t constitute a nation. Offering them a state is a plot against Jews.
The Arab-Israeli peace process doesn’t offer safety. Jews need a secure state—not a strip of land fourteen miles wide.

The Jewish-Muslim peace process runs against Judaism and Jewish history. Jews are attached to the land which the conductors of the peace process would give to the Palis: Judea, Samaria, Hebron, Schem, and the Temple Mount. The coastal areas of modern Israel are irrelevant to Jewish religion or history. Jews could just as well settle in Uganda or in Arizona.

The Palestinian-Israeli peace process is pointless. Israel can reach a settlement with the PA, but a sufficient number of Palis Arabs would always resent what they think is Jewish occupation of the land of their ancestors. A few thousand such Arabs would always be there, and would employ terrorist tactics to attack Israel.

The Israeli-Palestinian peace process fails to address the major issue of Israel’s Jewishness. In fact it is a negation of Jewishness.

Peace is not a proper objective. Jews moved to Israel to fulfill religious and nationalist objectives. If peace and security are the utmost objectives, Israelis should move to Canada.

  5. I have to say this before I make my point, or I will be hammered.

Who am I kidding? I am going to be hammered anyway.

    1) Israel has a right to exist as the homeland for Jews

    2) I am not in favor of the TSS

The most that Netanyahu will offer the Palestinians is autonomy over 40% of J&S

    1) Israel will control all borders

    2) Israel will control who can enter and leave (in essence, the population register) Even Gazans would not be allowed in.

Most here would would consider that offer too generous.

However the Palestinians want sovereignty. Not a very limited autonomy. The PA wants the trappings of sovereignty. Control of border and access – which Israel will never give.

I DO NOT SAY ISRAEL SHOULD GIVE IT! I am not in favor of the TSS.

The Palestinians will never agree to a permanent state of inferiority of non-sovereignty. Who would?

When these talks fail … and they will …

How will Israel deal with the 1.5 – 2 Million Palestinians left in J&S?

    A) How will Israel explain why Arabs in Israel have representation in the Knesset, while Arab in J&S don’t?

    B) How will Israel explain why Jews in J&S have the vote while Arabs in J&S do not?

    C) How will Israel explain why the Palestinians cannot have sovereignty with open borders and access

    D) How will Israel explain that if they will not give the Palestinians sovereignty, neither will they give them the vote.

These are questions that have to be addressed EVEN if one opposes the TSS.

The status quo is obviously not acceptable to the Palestinians, yet the Israelis seem to be offering little more than the TSS.

Wisely so! I am NOT criticizing Israel.

But, even while Israel takes a wise course of action … it has to be prepared for the questions A, B, C, and D.

Israel will win this round of talks for two reasons.

    1) The Palestinians will not concede a Jewish state

    2) Israel will not concede sovereignty even if the Arabs were to agree to a Jewish state.

    So, nothing will be achieved.

But how will Israel defend maintaining the status quo after that failure?

  6. Good question!

The only reason why I can think of for Israel to drag out the farce is that it doesn’t want to be blamed for the collapse of the talks.

In the end, Israel will be blamed anyway! The Jewish State is blessed with idiots running its government.
