Yamit brought this to my attention. I’m glad he did. Evidently there are 2000 such Hebrews that live in Israel but the Israeli government is not prepared to recognize them as Jews.
I wonder why?
Assuming they are not halachicly Jews, they should be encourage to convert.
My limited understanding of this group is that they are more messianic Christians than Jewish.
My limited understanding of this problem is that the “Hebrews” view themselves as the original Jews and will not undergo conversion as a group. It may be that their stay in Israel for over twenty to thirty years has led to a mellowing of their attitudes and their children may indeed be willing to join with the rest of the Jews, but that is strictly speculation on my part.
