Media downplay Tsarnaev connection to Muslim Student Assoc

By Charles C Johnson, THE DAILY CALLER

Coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing has ignored admitted bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s connection to his college’s Muslim Student Association, a group that has close relations with both the Muslim Brotherhood and a local imam friendly with an al-Qaida operative.

Although a student leader and the mainstream media have downplayed Tsarnaev’s ties to the the group, Tsarnaev associated frequently with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

The Washington Post on April 27 reported that Tsarnaev, who has admitted his role in the Marathon terrorist bombing to police, played intramural soccer with MSA members, contradicting earlier reports that the U. Mass-Dartmouth student spurned an invitation to join the controversial Muslim Brotherhood-linked student organization.

“For a time, Jahar played on an intramural soccer team composed of students involved with the campus Muslim Student Association,” explained the Post’s Marc Fisher, a fact that has since been missing from coverage.

In fact, Tsarnaev played soccer with the Muslim Student Association nearly every week, according to MSA Secretary Bassel Nasri in an interview with George Stephanopoulos and Diane Sawyer on April 19, 2013. Nasri simply neglected to say they were MSA games. Although Stephanopoulos described Nasri as “a soccer buddy” of Tsarnaev, neither he nor Sawyer mentioned that they were co-religionists and that the soccer games were organized by the Muslim Student Association.

Nasri was later interviewed by CNN and again didn’t mention that he had known Tsarnaev through the Muslim Student Association’s weekly soccer games.

“We used to play soccer together,” Nasri told Piers Morgan. “We used to hang out a few times. We weren’t too close — we were more acquaintances than friends. But he was really mostly a pretty good guy in that sense. He would always like ask for — if you needed any help with anything. So I’m really surprised at the outcome of what happened in the past week or so.”

A day later, Nasri told 60 Minutes that he tried to recruit Tsarnaev to the Muslim Student Association, without any luck. He left out that the soccer games where Tsarnaev was a regular player were MSA activities. He even seemed to suggest to Scott Pelley that had Tsarnaev joined MSA more seriously, the bombing wouldn’t have happened. According to the 60 Minutes report:

These friends saw him two weeks ago. He was a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Ahmad Nassri and Bassel Nasri tried, without luck to get him to join the MSA, the Muslim Student Association.

Scott Pelley: Did you see him at mosque? You see him at prayers? Nothing like that?

Group: No.

Bassel Nasri: No, unfortunately.

Scott Pelley: Unfortunately?

Bassel Nasri: I would’ve loved for him to come to the MSA a few times so he can maybe understand his religion better. Maybe that would, that would’ve helped in what happened, I would say.

Assuming Nasri is telling the truth — he, along with half a dozen other MSA members and their faculty sponsor, Neil Fennessey, did not return request for comments — he is wrong about the Muslim Student Association’s not being a haven for radicalism, explains David Reaboi, vice president of strategic communications at the Center for Security Policy.

“As the first group established by expat Muslim Brothers in America in the 1960s, the MSA has a history of Islamist radicalism,” Reaboi explains. “At the time, educational grants and fellowships in the US brought large numbers of university-age students from the Middle East to study, especially in the Midwest. The MSA began as a front for Brotherhood activity in this country by providing cover for these recently emigrated Brothers to meet and connect.”

In fact, several Muslim Student Association students have been brought up on terrorism charges. In April 2012, Muslim Student Association member Tarek Mehanna, who earned a doctorate at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, was sentenced to 17 and a half years for  conspiring to aid al-Qaida. Abu Mansoor Al-Amriki (a.k.a. Omar Hammani), a terrorist leader and former president of the University of South Alabama’s Muslim Students’ Association, was added to the FBI’s Most Wanted List in 2012.

The Facebook page of the Muslim Student Association at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth has over one hundred members and routinely advertises speeches and seminars taught by radical imams and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR)’s Todd Gallinger, who visited the campus in the days after the Boston bombing

Federal prosecutors in 2007 named CAIR as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a criminal conspiracy to aid Hamas, and an FBI agent testified that the group was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee. Although that case ended in a mistrial, the FBI in January 2009  instructed all field offices to cut ties with CAIR. Still, CAIR continues to be the go-to group for Muslim Student Association groups.

“Islamists’ hold on student groups like the MSA — which parallels the their hold on so-called Muslim ‘civil rights’ groups and other large Muslim organizations — speaks to the unfortunate monopoly Brotherhood-linked groups have over the organized Muslim community in the US,” says Reaboi.

In keeping with that radicalism, U. Mass-Dartmouth’s MSA Facebook group’s members repeatedly advertise talks by radical imams like Suhaib Webb of the Islamic Society of Boston’s Roxbury center. Webb, a convert to Islam who leads the largest mosque in New England, regularly preaches in the Cambridge mosque the two brothers attended.

Webb was an associate of Anwar Awlaki, an Al-Qaeda affiliated preacher killed in 2011 by a drone strike. Two days before the attacks of September 11, 2001, the two imams headlined a fundraiser [pdf] on behalf of Jamil al Amin (a.k.a. H. Rap Brown), who had murdered two police officers. Webb and Awlaki raised $100,000 to pay for Amin’s legal defense.

Although local and national media have repeatedly cited Webb as a voice of moderate Islam in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, the Massachusetts governor’s office decided to replace him as a representative of Boston’s Muslim community at an interfaith service remembering the bombing victims.

Webb subsequently distanced himself from Awlaki, but Tsarnaev did not. According to The Daily Beast, Awlaki’s pro-jihad sermons were the inspiration behind the Boston Marathon bombings, and there’s some reason to think that a Twitter account belonging to Tsarnaev was retweeting pro-Awlaki messages.

Tsarnaev had also been following a radical account @Al_FirdausiA, who goes by the name “Ghuraba.” Tsarnaev was the first to follow that account, which usually signals a strong personal connection and possible sock puppetry. Both users followed one another, meaning that direct messages are possible.

Ghuraba created his account on March 11, 2013, just over a month before the bombings and  praised terrorist and Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, whom Ghuraba recommends to his followers, saying that whoever listens to Awlaki will “gain an unbelievable amount of knowledge.”

On March 13, 2013, Tsarnaev retweeted one of Ghuraba’s messages: “It’s our responsibility my brothers & sisters to ask Allah to ease the hardships of the oppressed and give us victory over kufr #islam #dua

That same language of kufr, or “infidel,” was reportedly also used by Tsarnaev’s brother, as well, when he shouted down a speaker at a Boston-area mosque.

The Muslim Student Association’s faculty sponsor and leadership did not return requests for comment through phone calls, Facebook and email.

Re. another Holocaust. Our civilized countries approve the mass killing of unborn babies and euthanasia. Google “UK NHS Pathway”. The very ill of all ages, the old, and the disabled are simply removed from regular hospitals and placed in a separate institution where they are simply starved. No food, no water. ~~~ Governments use army recruits, prison inmates, the mentally disabled, and third world children to experiment all kinds of drugs and toxic contaminants. ~~~ The horrors of Nazi Germany have been quietly adopted and accepted. Nobody minds if white males are excluded. Recently our CBC posted an ad saying “no whites need to apply” for a TV host job. The public are now conditioned to accept institutionalized murder and discrimination, and the demonization of Jews. From here to another Holocaust is just a matter of degrees. The principles have been breached.

  4. @ Bernard Ross:
This morning I was reading “The 10,000 Year Explosion,” a book about human evolution. It tells how after the invention of agriculture food became storable and also vulnerable to theft. Accumulated food led to wealthy nonproductive elites, who needed to establish a government to limit theft, violence and insurrection. “Presumably governments did this (keeping people subdued) because it let them extract more resources from their subjects, the same reason that farmers castrate bulls.” (Page 70)~~ In other words, govt elites want the population disarmed, submissive, afraid, and under control, because it’s easier to exploit them that way. It’s the same old story, whether 10,000 years ago or today.

a great link; a frightening expose which should scare the hell out of everyone regarding those who are running the country. It is amazing that this brave woman has survied her ordeal, apparently others died mysteriously. I would vote for her for president over any of the leaders of the nation who apparently do not have the character to step forward and bring justice to the american people. There is no trust because the behavior of the leaders is despicable.

  6. It looks like the Administration orders the media to downplay Tsarnaev relation to Muslim community or mosque.
What about the role of some of the Mosque leadership?

He is dangerous because he is participating in an agenda which seeks to incite to kill jews. When one is able to accept that as a fact then one is in a better position to identify the appropriate solutions. The wannabe Jew killers are merciless and ruthless and the appropriate response would take that into account.
Under the current conditions it would be reasonable to conclude that all the prerequisites of a final solution to the Jewish problem are in place and ready to go. It would be foolish to assume that the institutions thought to guarantee safety will operate in such a way. Those institutions are proving their fragility, and unreliability, right now in your own nation. the police have threatened the jews in their own synagogue while allowing terror muslim killers freedom to incite.

I completely agree and I think it is global. I suspect it may have to do with the incredible, almost doubling, of the global population since 1950 and the problems of controlling and governing that population combined with advances in technology which allow more transparency but also more control. Too many people on the globe and no management expertise to maintain it.

http://vimeo.com/63749370 like to hear your views..I think when the whole thing blows up the Jews will find they are on the wrong side. Both sides will blame the Jews.

I have watched 40 minutes of it and have to put it aside till later or tomorrow. My initial reaction is that it appears too ideological and although many facts are true, and I agree that certain tactics are used by the communist, similar is true of the fascists. Hitler may have been called a national socialist but his funders were US and global capitalists. For me the ideologicals are similar whether they are right or left. They both have ideologies which resemble little of reality, they both end up with scenarios which benefit a few, they both usurp the reigns of government to keep themselves in power and wealth. the useful idiots of both sides wear blinders. From this movie you would think that norman rockwell america had no real issues and that the issues were created by communism. That blacks were not deprived of their rights, that labor was not downtrodden and misused by greedy capitalists, etc etc. I am of the persuasion that the real problem is greedy, corrupt power-hungry people who tend to find each other and make deals regardless of what BS ideology they spout. actually I don’t see that we are moving to a communist state but rather towards a corporate fascist authoritarian state. I have experienced the tactics of creeping socialism and communism and those who are willing to do anything to extend their power. The same is true of the other side. communism exists and has power because freedom is abused under capitalism to swindle, enslave and abuse the majority of the populations. I absolutely abhor castro and his tactics but I also understand the abuses of a so-called “free press” such as the bought kangaroo court press which incites genocide against Israel and the jews. It is a good demonstration of how free press, free speech, free market combine to produce a propaganda media which disseminates lies. therefore, either side is dangerous and wants to fool people into buying their ideology and keeping them in power and wealth. The free enterprise system, which I adore for its creative potential and individual empowerment, maintained and promoted the absurd british feudal/caste system where into current times. What is needed is to be rid of isms and those who exploit the human community to maintain their excessive wealth, power and privilege. I will feel much better when politicians and corporate leaders are executed for their billion dollar swindles and their wealth and assets seized in the same way that the assets of drug barons are seized. The damage to an economic community over a number of years from corruption at high levels would likely do away with all our debt problems. The CIA economic factbook states:

Since 1975, practically all the gains in household income have gone to the top 20% of households. Since 1996, dividends and capital gains have grown faster than wages or any other category of after-tax income.

such thefts need investigating and like enron the assets of the thieves need to be seized and returned to the victims: the US public. The wholesale export of jobs, capital and production which belong to the US economic community in a conspiracy involving corrupt politicians and corporations needs addressing. A free enterprise system advocacy should not allow for such massive ongoing theft without returning the swindled assets. A free enterprise system must provide for the regulation of the greedy and corrupt and for an equitable distribution of generated income in order to be sustainable. If this does not happen then fascism and communism will knock at the door and be welcomed inside. This is my problem with embracing ideologies simplistically as theories as opposed to seeing the actual performance on the ground. The fall of communism was not a demonstration of the “truth” capitalism but of the falsity of communism. The failures of unbridled capitalism open the door to accepting govt expansion and control. The best weapon agianst communism is the operation of a fair and just free enterprise system.
So far the film appears too simplistic and the ideological agenda too obvious. This film would like me to choose between two evils by pretending that all the problems originate from one side. Like you I am puzzled by the ignoring of the creeping threat of Islam in all the institutions of the US and elsewhere.

  10. @ yamit82:
Censorship of the internet is not a solution. I’d rather see them spread outlandish theories about Israel than see any limit to freedom of speech. — Alex Jones is one of the promoters of the idea that the Mossad is behind everything. He is influential and dangerous because he purposely mixes facts with speculation in a way the audience doesn`t notice.

There is another disturbing fact. A government can’t function when there is such level of suspicion and lack of cooperation among the population. Even their best constructed campaigns are ridiculed. How do you convey a message if the target is not receptive? Only by intimidation and by force. So in a strange dynamic, both the authorities spinning facts and the suspicious public are creating this new reality, the United States as a Stasi society, where anything can be defined as a crime and prosecuted, and where everyone lives in fear of their government.

an interesting observation but isn’t the same true of Canada and Europe?

I watch Judge Judy and Morey Povich and I am alarmed how national character has degenerated.
Your are correct about Islam, when chaos desends populations sift seek order, derection and that is what Islam to will seem to provide. At this time I see no defence against the progressives. The Sixties generation is self-abosrobed and the youger generations are rootless.
You need a film and a philosophy that can counter Sex, drugs and Rock and Roll. Jeramiah has work cut out for him.

  16. @ yamit82:
Thank you, I’ll watch it tonight.
Regarding blaming everything on the Jews – what’s new? They will find the way to do it, even when 100% of the evidence points elsewhere. That’s why it is so frustrating to watch your government pretending – yes, pretending, because they don’t believe it themselves – that they can go along with the loony idea of “land for peace”. – It is better to accept that anti-Semitism will always exist in one way or another, so the solution is not to bribe the enemy until you have no more land left, but to make him respect you. Sounds like a bunch of platitudes, but even such basic notions don’t resonate with your government elite.

  17. The US govt has a serious credibility problem. It’s worse than it has ever been before, and has grown exponentially in the last ten years. We don’t need to go to weird websites to find conspiracy theories alongside space alien reports. Now suspicion of the government ultimate agenda is seeping into mainstream websites.

There is another disturbing fact. A government can’t function when there is such level of suspicion and lack of cooperation among the population. Even their best constructed campaigns are ridiculed. How do you convey a message if the target is not receptive? Only by intimidation and by force. 18. Former DHS Officer and Whistleblower labelled a “Domestic Terrorist”

Julia Davis is a former DHS officer/supervisor for Customs and Border Protection turned “Whistleblower” who, in an effort to suppress her story and discredit her, was labelled a “domestic terrorist” and persecuted to a breathtaking extent.

    1. Isolate

    2. Ridicule

    3. Marginalize

Her crime? She had evidence about potential terrorists entering the country on July 4, 2004 and her attempts to report her concerns “up the chain” were ignored because the intelligence department was having a unit social event barbeque – so she reported her concerns to the FBI instead about border crossers that fit the profile outlined in an alert to the Border Patrol. Her report to the FBI was viewed by DHS as a disloyal “whistleblower”.

In court documents, the government stated that they considered her a “domestic terrorist” because of her “derogatory” statements about the Department of Homeland Security.

Let that sink in. Speak the Truth rooted in deep love of country and be labelled a “domestic terrorist”.

She has also produced and released a movie called “Top Priority: The Terror Within“

Nuclear waste itself is a nightmare. The Hanford waste site in Washington State is leaking big time, and radioactive material has already reached the Columbia river. ~~~ The ENENEWS site you posted is excellent, I recommend it to everybody. ~~~ Now here is another news you won’t see on the MSM: Three nuclear reactors in South Caroline could go off anytime, just as in Fukushima, were one of the nearby dams fail. http://ecowatch.com/2013/echoes-fukushima-duke-energy-nuclear-meltdown/
