Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger, “Second Thought”
“Israel Hayom”, December 3, 2012, bit.ly/R1MACF
The November 29, 2012 UN vote to upgrade the Palestinian Authority (PA) to a “non-member observer state” – in violation of the 1993 Oslo Accords – was an expected derivative of Israel’s policy towards the PA since 1993 – critical concessions, retreats, indecisiveness, submission to pressure and appeasement.
What has Israel done since 1993?
Unprecedented Israeli concessions – such as the legitimization, importation and the arming of 60,000 Palestinian terrorists from Sudan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Tunisia and the evacuation of Gaza and 40% of Judea and Samaria – resulted in unprecedented Palestinian hate-education and incitement, terrorism and non-compliance.
The flabbier the Israeli policy and the frailer the Israeli response to Palestinian terrorism, the more flagrant is the Palestinian abrogation of agreements. For instance, 270 Israelis were murdered by Palestinian terrorists between 1978 and the 1993 signing of the Oslo Accords, compared with some 2,000 murdered since Oslo, mostly by PLO terrorists. In 2000, Prime Minister Barak offered to uproot all Jewish settlements; Mahmoud Abbas and Arafat responded with unparalleled wave of suicide-bombings in the pre-1967 area of Israel. Prime Minister Sharon’s 2005 uprooting of 25 Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria and Gaza induced an unprecedented barrage of missiles on pre-1967 Israel. Israel’s inaction in the face of the 2009-2012 amassing of long-range missiles in Gaza triggered a daily barrage of missiles at pre-1967 Israel.
The post-Oslo conduct by Mahmoud Abbas and Arafat – role models of intra-Arab subversion and international terrorism, Holocaust deniers and allies of the Communist Bloc, Khomeini, Saddam Hussein Bin Laden, North Korea and Hugo Chavez – has reaffirmed that the PLO does not change its spots, only its tactics. Mahmoud Abbas is not troubled by the size – but by the existence – of the Jewish State in the Middle East.
The systematic Palestinian effort to leverage terrorism and diplomacy, in order to eliminate the Jewish State, behooves Israel to resurrect the steadfastness and defiance which characterized most Israeli Prime Ministers from Ben Gurion (1948) through Shamir (1992).
What should Israel do?
Accordingly, Israel should extend Jerusalem’s municipal lines, which is a prerequisite for the transformation of Jerusalem’s steady decline into long term growth, through a dramatic upgrade of Jerusalem’s infrastructures of transportation, industry and housing. Greater Jerusalem should stretch from Gush Etzion and Nokdim (south) to the Dead Sea (east), Mt. Ba’al Hazor (northeast) and Kiryat Sefer (northwest),
Israel should embrace the former Supreme Court Justice Edmond Levy Report. The July 2012 report reconfirmed that according to international law, Judea and Samaria are not “occupied territory,” since no foreign entity was sovereign in the area in 1967. The 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention is not applicable since it prohibits the coerced transfer of people to settlements, while Israeli settlers have settled of their own volition. Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria are legal. The Jewish State’s historical and legal rights in Judea and Samaria are based on the 1922 British Mandate. These rights were preserved by Article 80 of the U.N. Charter, which provides continuity of Jewish rights in the Jewish Homeland. And, the report calls on Israel to allow construction in the settlements, enabling Israelis to directly purchase land in Judea and Samaria.
The Israeli law should be applied – and transportation infrastructure should be upgraded in area C, which is controlled exclusively by Israel according to the Oslo Accords.
All VIP benefits, by Israel, to all Palestinian officials should be annulled, pending the elimination of hate-education and incitement from the PA education, divinity and media sectors.
Such steps would trigger international resentment and possibly sanctions. However, pre-1993 Israeli defiance, under harsher circumstances, was initially condemned, but then rewarded with an enhanced posture of deterrence and respect. It demonstrated that Israel would not sacrifice dire national interests on the altar of convenience and wishful-thinking. For example, Prime Minister Ben Gurion defied the 1948/1949 US pressure/embargo to refrain from a declaration of independence, to “end occupation of the Negev” and to avoid the incorporation of – and construction in – Jerusalem and declaring it the capital of Israel. Prime Minister Eshkol dared the 1967 US pressure against preempting Egypt and the reunification of – and construction in – Jerusalem. Prime Minister Golda Meir withstood the 1970 US pressure to repartition Jerusalem, authorizing the construction of four more neighborhoods, the home of some 150,000 Israelis. Prime Minister Begin defied the 1981 US threats and punishments, applying Israel’s laws to the Golan Heights. Prime Minister Shamir rebuffed US pressure to freeze settlements, but US-Israel strategic cooperation expanded unprecedentedly.
Will contemporary Israeli leaders follow in the footsteps of Ben Gurion – Shamir? Or, will they sustain the self-destructive Oslo state of mind, ignoring the Palestinian reality and that in the Middle East either you eat from – or become part of – the menu?

Not one more dollar to ANY Muslim country or organization.
Not one more dollar to Hamas-Gaza-PLO Palestinian Authority Muslim Terrorist OCCUPATION FORCES.
Stop immorally FORCING non-Muslims to finance Muslim terrorists!
Never forget. Palestinian Authority Muslims CELEBRATED with great joy and delight the cruel slaughter of our cherished 3,000 on 9/11. THOUSANDS of INHUMAN PA Muslims danced in the streets, passed out sweets and fired into the air.
Muslims celebrated 9/11 in countries around the world. Muslim monsters celebrate whenever devout Muslims blow up amongst Israelis.
How far and how low Western civilization has fallen that our TREASONOUS leaders embrace, finance and support Muslim terrorists in Israel and other countries.
When 70% of American Jews voted in Obama, we can clearly see that Israel is in big trouble. It demontrates that Jews are divided against themselves, and Evangelical Christians appear more unified in their support of Israel. So, we must first find a way to unify 13 million Jews in America, Israel, and elsewhere, to accept responsibility in a clear and trasparent way to protect the nation of Israel. Jewish wealth and influence must be channeled to offset the venom that comes from left wing 501(c) American foundations who espouse anti-Jewish philosophy. This new unification of thinking would then enbolden Jewish leadership to take the necessary steps to neutralize their enemies. If Jews lose the support of America then who can they trust? The UN? Europe? No, we must start educating and influencing Americans and move outward from there.
“we are seeing exactly why God found it necessary to wiped it off the face of the earth before. If only we could count on him to do it again.”
Here’s hoping. “No man knows what a day may bring forth.”
I agree, stop funding for the UN. Should have stopped funding them long ago.
It has taken the world thousands of years, but we have finally decided to re-invent the Tower of Babel, in this incarnation, the United Nations. And we are seeing exactly why God found it necessary to wiped it off the face of the earth before. If only we could count on him to do it again.
@ Dr. Steve Carol:
Hear, hear!
Love it.
Now since the UN has conferred “state” status to a non-state terrorist organization, Israel, supported by the few who voted with her, should demand that the UN General Assembly confer such status to each of the myriad terrorist groups in Latin America, the Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland, the Breton Liberation Front and the Corsican Liberation front in France, the ETA in Spain, the Red Army Faction in Germany, Italian Red Brigade in Italy, the PKK and the ASALA (Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia) in Turkey, the Chechen Separatists in Russia, Al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, the Jundallah in Iran, Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the East Turkestan Liberation Organization in China, and Aum Shinrikyo in Japan — just to name a few. First it will give those nations named something to think about, other than what they deem the “greatest threat to world peace” i.e. Israel. In that way the world gone topsy-turvy can turn that insane asylum that is the UN, into the world class zoo it has become — but we–the United States–should NOT contribute funding – not even a penny – to it.
@ Bernard Ross:
Well said. But the Israeli government – by its silence and inaction – is breaking agreements with the Israeli voters as well, and failing to uphold its sacred duty to protect the state of Israel and the Jews of Israel. How about that?
IN the same way they were the guarantors of prior agreements(san remo, LON, UNC80) and dishonored them, now the UN, EU, US have dishonored and broken the last agreements of Oslo and the road map. They cannot expect Israel to adhere to agreements that they all keep breaking. Actually they do expect the jews to be stupid, docile and suicidal otherwise they would not be shameful enough to make their suggestions. BB should publicly ridicule their hypocrisy and render them red faced. Furthermore, rabin signed an agreement that was being observed, though unwanted, out of diplomatic honor(something they never do) Now that they have all breached the agreement there is no reason to keep talking about its terms as those terms are dead, this is what BB should be saying
The vast majority of Israeli Jews understand “Palestine” means Israel’s extinction.
As Yamit82 can tell you, there is good reason why Israel is defying the world. Israelis know better than any one else through bitter experience that peace is impossible.
G-d forbid, an Arab state should never arise in Israel’s heartland!
Prof. Paul Eidelbeg: “What induced (Prime Minister) Begin to betray his own Zionist principles at Camp David? What induced him to anticipate, in effect, the ‘two-state’ solution Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed thirty years later on June 14, 2009?…During the three months before the Camp David Summit, Israel did not receive a single nut or a bolt in the U.S. military supply line. http://i-ari.org/the-pressure-cooker/#more-4002
QUESTIONS: How vulnerable is Israel to US denial of military supplies? What is the Israeli government doing to ensure military supplies self-sufficiency?
Who is Israel? – Is it the people of Israel? Or is it the Israeli ministers who take orders from outside powers?
Israel this, and Israel that…. That’s what we write. But there’s a fundamental difference between the people of Israel and those who make decisions in their name. Why not say THE ISRAELI PEOPLE SHOULD DEMAND that their representatives do what is best for the country, and then specify what the writer proposes. Not in every case, obviously, but in issues that affect the country’s borders.
As I mentioned elsewhere, words have power, and the Israeli people need to become aware of how the fate of Israel has been taken out of their hands and submitted to a group of politicians who regard them with contempt, and who listen instead to outside powers and organizations. So much so that when someone says “Israel should do this” we just assume it’s up to the government to decide (and hope that God will guide their actions). ISRAEL – as far as decision making is concerned – has become the small group of ministers who sit at telephone conferences with a White House representative – who tells them what to do.
