Report: Obama promised Abbas prolonged Israeli settlement freeze
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz
U.S. President Barack Obama has promised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas a prolonged Israeli settlement freeze in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Army Radio reported on Sunday quoting London-based Arab-language newspaper Al-Hayat.
According to the report, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told the Arab League ministers Saturday night that Obama made his promise off the record in order to avoid conflict with right-wing factions in Israel.
Palestinian sources also claim that Israel has committed to continuing the moratorium on settlement construction in the West Bank beyond ten months. [..]
“If Israel builds one house in the West Bank, Palestinians will immediately stop the negotiations,” Erekat said.
Erekat said a final decision would be made by the Palestinian Liberation Organization executive committee next week.
