Brigadier General (res.) Amir Avivi
Founder and Chairman of IDSF Habithonistim
Over the past year, IDSF has grown exponentially, and our growth is largely due to the generosity of our supporters abroad. What started just three years ago, is now a major movement of 16,000+ people, guiding and shaping Israel’s Israel national security priorities. I’d like to share with you a few highlights of this growth:
-
- The IDSF research department, staffed by 15 researchers and a content desk, revealed the truth about the Lebanon gas deal. Their papers on Pay-for-Slay, Iran, and Deadly Stones, have been presented to top military officials, foreign ambassadors, and members of government. Our National Strategic Assessment for Israel and public surveys provide deep analysis about the core issues impacting Israel’s national security. (Click here or an English language summary of the Assessment.)
- At the request of Israel’s border police, we led the recruitment to build the first unit of the new national guard for Israel.
- Our NATO briefings have brought together the ambassadors and defense attaches from many countries to hear from IDSF experts about Israel’s security needs. The briefings are facilitating strategic partnerships between countries.
- We had 85 lectures in the pre-army programs, hundreds of media appearances, and audiences of 500+ viewers for our English language security briefings.
- Our website, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok channels have exceeded one million views. Our social media presence allows us to reach the young generations of Israelis, spread our messaging, and build our movement.

Balloon Reconnaissance: Old Tactic with Modern Twist
BRIGADIER GENERAL RES. AMIR AVIVI
The recent Chinese “meteorological research balloon gone off track” incidents in North America and then in Latin America are nothing new.
Aerial reconnaissance and intel-gathering missions have been a standard tactic employed by militaries the world over since manned balloon flights themselves were the height of “technology” developed way back in the late 18th century.
The strategic advantage of using airspace was quickly understood by military tacticians. They used these to gather intelligence on enemy forces in the battlefields and to neutralize any pending threat.
From the Civil War era through World War I, aerial balloons were used in conflicts around the world. As technology progressed, new and more sophisticated options replaced the balloons.
The First World War saw the first widespread use of aircraft for both tactical and strategic reconnaissance. This continued into WWII and, as aircraft technology developed past the blade era to jet engines, countries found new ways to exploit these for their purposes.

PA Senior Officials – The Palestinian Authority is Imploding
LT. COLONEL RES. YEDID BARUCH
Developments and events in recent months in the PA territories and the Gaza Strip, raise crucial questions regarding the prospect of the future survival of the PA. Talks with senior PA and Fatah officials, and with other Palestinian sources within Judea and Samaria (“West Bank”) with knowledge of the matter, paint a clear image of the Fatah-based Authority that is gradually losing its grip over its jurisdiction.
Indeed, the PA’s medical chart is a mile long with endless ailments – and the so called “lack of diplomatic horizon” is far from the worst among them. Senior Palestinian officials highly doubt the efficacy of the PA, its status and its mere survivability. This lack of trust stems from various causes, chief among them recent developments and trends on the Palestinian street, the rise of Hamas, the loss of the PA institutions’ credibility with the Palestinian public, and political infighting.

Russia’s Foreign Policy in the Middle East
DR. ANAT HOCHBERG MAROM
Over the past decade, particularly in the past year since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Russia’s foreign policy has undergone dramatic change. Its involvement in current major geopolitical affairs and its vigorous activity across the international arena, leave little room for doubt – Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, is investing great efforts into cementing Russia’s influence as a superpower and an important key player in global politics, by disrupting the existing status-quo and creating a new and challenging balance of power with the United States and the West. Motivated by an imperialistic vision, complex strategic considerations and with the use of global resources, the head of the Kremlin is employing an active, assertive and defiant foreign policy. This policy is based on fusing a challenging attitude towards the US and the Western hegemony, with manipulative collaboration with Western countries and the international community such that to help to promote his own interests and realize Moscow’s broad interests.

Israel Needs a National Guard Right Now
BRIGADIER GENERAL RES. AMIR AVIVI
The latest terror attacks in Jerusalem are exposing a fatal flaw in Israel’s armor that needs to be addressed immediately to save lives. A national guard of trained volunteers, deployed in city centers under the Israeli Police, can prevent the next attack.
Israel has no lack of security intelligence, having developed world-class capabilities in this area over the years. Unlike some other countries, the intelligence-gathering components of Israel’s various security arms – IDF, Shin Bet, Mossad, Police – maintain the commendable practice of pooling resources and delivering intelligence, even if it won’t directly benefit one specific organization.
