Quartet supports negotiated settlement

By Ted Belman

In my post Netanyahu commits to promoting Arab construction in East Jerusalem, Netanyahu’s concessions to the Quartet were listed.

Here’s what he got in return

Quartet refuses to endorse unilateral state;

    Palestinians said they were disappointed that the Quartet refused to heed their call for unilateral statehood and instead continued to throw its support behind a negotiated solution, when it met on Saturday in Germany.

    “Unilateral actions by either party cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations and will not be recognized by the international community,” the group said in a statement it issued after the meeting.

    The Quartet, however, called on both the Israelis and the Palestinians to reach a negotiated solution by September 2011. It said it planed with the help of its envoys to work with both parties before its next gathering in March.

But said the “Quartet should not be distracted from its task by the events in Egypt.” Why not? Better to stablize the region before pushing for results. Israel will certainly be distracted.

I don’t see any of the Quartet calling for elections in Judea and Samaria like they are in Egypt.

  1. If Obama got rid of the quartet I would hope to heck he would be greatly applauded for it. Having said that with the craw you have stuck in your throat about Black I mean,Barak Obama, you would most likely side with the quartet. LOL!!

    That’s right, play that race card. Pathetic. Yeah, cuz’ one must not like Obama solely because he’s black; it couldn’t possibly be because he’s done enough things to make someone legitimately concerned. It couldn’t possibly be that he is a Manchurian candidate. It couldn’t possibly be because the writing was on the wall well before 2008.

    What are you talking about? The quartet is led by the U.S. The other three entities, UN, EU and Russia are simply partners. The quartet was formulated by George W. Bush and made up of 3 arch enemies of Israel. The quartet is very very bad. Their pronouncements teeth or no teeth have given Israel not a moments rest.

    There is nothing good about the quartet which Bush initiated to make nice to the 3 entities who were against going to war in Iraq. THE WAR BY THE WAY which did not brought ‘democracy’ to IRAQ wink wink, cough sputter which by the way, all of you who applauded that “phony democracy” we just had to have, now claim if democracy can be had in the ME it would take decades upon decades to make it happen. I say it is much too cold to be wearing flip flops.

    And watch with the wake-up calls!! Do you live in Israel? And the ‘rest’ of the Israelis you urge to wake up, btw are the ones whose sons go to war.

    That is a good and fair position. It does not FORCE the Israelis OR the Arabs into any sort of action; it merely encourages the two parties to sort out their differences between them, using the recognition by the “international community” as an incentive for them to carry this out.

    As for calling for the Arabs and Israelis to settle their differences by September, they are demonstrating their lack of connection with reality. The Jews and Arabs of Israel have been struggling for a “peaceful” accomodation with each other since before the start of the British Mandate — about a hundred years, give or take — and have progressed only to the condition they are now in. Perhaps in another 100 years, they will have worked out their differences. In the meantime, neither Israel nor Arab Palestine are fully recognized by the international community. That is the reality.
